Project Description:
Murtagh Studio was engaged to complete the building control, tender, and construction drawings for a previously approved planning application. As the project progressed, refinements to the design became necessary, thus amendments and a re-submission for planning approval were submitted to the local council. The property, a semi-detached 1920s home situated on a prominent corner plot, needed to accommodate the evolving needs of a growing young family. The primary goal was to enhance the home’s spatial efficiency and functionality while maintaining its period charm and ensuring seamless integration with the surrounding streetscape.
The design strategy focused on expanding the existing three bedroom home into a five bedroom home through a combination of side, rear, and loft extensions. A key element of the transformation was the creation of a large, open-plan ground floor living space, designed to offer a contemporary feel with high-specification finishes. At the rear, an impressive four metre tall full width sliding door set, complemented by roof lights, were incorporated to flood the interior with natural light, drawing brightness deep into the floor plan. The side extension, set back from the existing front façade, was carefully considered to respect the architectural rhythm of the street, ensuring that the modifications felt cohesive and in keeping with the surrounding homes.
Externally, the materials were selected to balance the aesthetics of the traditional character. The new extension was finished in white render, contrasting elegantly with the original red brick to create a refined yet sympathetic appearance. The loft conversion introduced a luxurious new principal suite, complete with a spacious bedroom, ensuite, and a walk-in wardrobe with a dormer addition that maximises internal headroom without overwhelming the property's proportions. By thoughtfully enhancing the home’s layout and aesthetics, Murtagh Studio has delivered a design that not only meets the family's needs but also complements and elevates the character of the existing house and its setting.
