Murtagh Studio was commissioned by a young family seeking to transform their home into a spacious, high-end living environment with a strong connection to the outdoors. The design prioritises open-plan living, maximizing natural light and creating a seamless transition between the interior and the south-facing garden, which boasts stunning views over the neighbouring farmland. To achieve this, large sliding doors were incorporated, allowing sunlight to flood the space while offering uninterrupted sightlines to the landscape beyond. The overall vision was to craft a modern and functional home that enhances daily family life while providing a striking architectural statement.
A key design feature is the integration of a sculptural concrete band, which not only serves as a distinctive architectural element but also extends into the garden, subtly defining outdoor spaces. Internally, the layout was reimagined to optimise functionality. The existing kitchen diner is repurposed to accommodate a new utility room and a flexible study/playroom, catering to the evolving needs of a growing family. By incorporating the existing large lounge and a portion of the garage, the extension allows for an expansive, light-filled open-plan living space that encourages interaction and connection. This carefully considered design ensures a balance between practicality and aesthetic refinement, reflecting the family’s desire for a high-specification finish.
At the heart of the new space is a generously proportioned kitchen, designed specifically for a family passionate about cooking and entertaining. The layout seamlessly extends into the garden, where an external cooking and dining area has been introduced, fostering an effortless indoor and outdoor lifestyle. While the design encourages socialising and relaxation, it also preserves ample space for a well-maintained garden, offering the perfect blend of modern functionality and natural beauty. By focusing on connectivity both within the home and with the surrounding landscape, Murtagh Studio has created a timeless yet contemporary family space that enhances everyday living.
