Project Description:
Following the successful completion of a neighbouring project, Murtagh Studio was approached to undertake a similar transformation for an aging chalet bungalow in need of renovation. The owners sought a traditional and in keeping redesign that would not only modernise the home but, also enhance its functionality and visual appeal. The brief focused on reconfiguring the layout to improve spatial flow, maximise natural light, and establish a strong connection between the interior and the expansive garden. By carefully balancing modern interventions with the existing structure, the design aimed to breathe new life into the property while ensuring a cohesive and elegant finish.
A key aspect of the renovation was the creation of a new principal bedroom suite, complete with an ensuite bathroom and a dedicated wardrobe space. This addition was designed to provide a private and luxurious retreat within the home, offering a sense of comfort and sophistication. In parallel, the living areas were reimagined to embrace an open-plan concept, fostering a sense of spaciousness and connectivity. By optimising sightlines throughout the property, the design ensures that the living spaces feel bright, airy, and intrinsically linked to the outdoor environment, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
To unify the overall appearance of the house and its extension, a carefully selected palette of materials was introduced. The existing structure, along with the new additions, was wrapped in a combination of green cladding and white render, creating a refined and cohesive architectural aesthetic. This approach not only modernised the home’s exterior but, also provided a seamless transition between old and new elements. The result is a beautifully transformed chalet bungalow that meets the needs of modern living while maintaining a strong connection to its surroundings, delivering a striking yet timeless design.
