Murtagh Studio was commissioned by a young couple with a growing family to redesign and extend their chalet bungalow. The goal was to create an open-plan living space that could cater to both family life and entertaining. To achieve this, the design introduced a new principal bedroom suite, which featured a private balcony, ensuite, and walk-in wardrobe. A rear and side extension significantly increased the home’s footprint, enhancing the ground floor with a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining, and family area. Additional improvements included the addition of a utility room, garage, and enlarged bedrooms, all aimed at accommodating the needs of a growing family.
The design also incorporated strategic dormers and skylights to maximize the amount of natural light flowing through the home. These elements work in harmony with the open-plan space at the rear, which integrates seamlessly with the garden, fostering an indoor-outdoor living experience. The layout was meticulously planned to provide flexibility, ensuring that the spaces would evolve alongside the family’s changing needs. Every aspect of the design was considered to promote a sense of openness and adaptability within the home.
The interior was finished with high-quality materials and modern finishes, elevating the overall aesthetic. The exterior updates were thoughtfully executed to refresh the home’s appearance while maintaining a sympathetic connection to the original structure. The result is a contemporary yet timeless design that meets the demands of the family’s lifestyle, creating a home that is both functional and visually appealing.
